Will conducts MRI scans of ex vivo brain samples. He is involved in all aspects of this process, from the storage and preparation of the samples in the wet lab to post-processing work done on MRI images. He works mostly with infant and fetal samples, whose diffusion-weighted images are used to visualize white matter tracts in the developing brainstem and cerebral cortex. Additionally, he uses the FreeSurfer ‘Freeview’ software to identify and manually label neuroanatomical areas in structural MRI images, which are then utilized as training data to improve automated tools for modeling the structure of the developing brain.
